About Bran Castle

Bran Castle, the former medieval passer, was built by Brasov as a result of the “Privilege” of November 19, 1377, issued by King Louis I of Anjou, for controlling and overseeing the Bran Step, encompassing the Transylvanian defense system. Between 1407-1419, the fortress was in the possession of Mircea cel Batran (1386-1418), the prince of Tara Romaneasca, and one of them, Michael I (1418-1420). Beginning with the eighteenth century, the fortress loses its strategic importance, becoming a place of administration and the residence of a castelan.

After the revolution of 1848, the feudal field of Bran was abolished and the castle, still remaining in Brasov, was occupied by Austro-Hungarian troops in 1877. On December 1, 1920 Brasov city donated the castle to Queen Maria of Romania, becoming the royal summer residence . After King Michael’s abdication, the castle became the property of the Romanian state and became, since 1956, a museum of medieval history.
